What Micellar Water Is

Just like many other amazing skincare products, micellar water had its origins in Paris. The water in Paris is known for being "hard" and packed with minerals like calcium and magnesium. Because this type of water can be harsh on the skin and hair, the folks in Paris wanted a way to cleanse their skin without needing to rinse with tap water afterward. This desire led to the creation of micellar water. Essentially, micellar water is a liquid cleanser that effectively removes dirt and oil from your skin. It’s like a soap that cleans your skin without the need to lather up or wash off.

How Micellar Water Works

It might sound surprising, but a cleanser can actually work wonders without needing any lathering or rinsing! The science behind the effectiveness of micellar water is pretty cool. As the name hints, micellar water is a solution containing special molecules known as micelles. These micelles naturally attract oil and dirt. So, when you use a cloth soaked in micellar water on your skin, these tiny micelles grab onto all the makeup, dirt, and grime, carrying them away. In simple terms, micellar water gently whisks away residue from your skin without stripping away moisture or causing inflammation.

Using Micellar Water on Babies

Now that we know how micellar water works, let's address whether it's safe for your baby's skin. As a parent, scrutinizing skincare product ingredients for your baby is crucial. The good news is that, in general, micellar water is safe for your baby's delicate skin. However, it's important to note that some varieties, particularly those designed for adults, might include potentially harmful ingredients. These could be uncomfortable for your baby's sensitive skin, especially for newborns and those with extra sensitivity or dryness. So, while most micellar waters are safe, it's wise to avoid those with potentially harsh ingredients. In general, you’ll also want to avoid micellar waters and other skincare products that have the following chemicals:

  • Sulfates: Sulfates create bubbles and suds in products like shampoo for that clean feeling. They can come from coconut or palm oil but are often synthetic from petroleum. Sulfates strip natural oils, drying and irritating skin. Some sulfates even have carcinogenic concerns. Luckily, skin cleansing doesn't require sulfates. Avoid sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS).
  • Certain types of alcohol: Some synthetic alcohols can dry out your skin or cause allergies, but not all are bad. Fatty alcohols are beneficial. Check for harmful alcohols like benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, SD alcohol, ethanol, isopropyl, and methanol on ingredient lists to ensure safe skincare for you or your baby.
  • Phenoxyethanol: Phenoxyethanol preserves skincare products but poses risks. It's allergenic, irritating, and harmful if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed. It’s also linked to reproductive harm. It can harm the brain and nervous system and potentially become a carcinogen. Best to steer clear.
  • Parabens: Parabens are cheap and efficient preservatives in skincare, preventing mold and bacteria. They're in various products like moisturizers and sunscreen. However, they imitate estrogen in the body, raising health worries.
  • Phthalates: Phthalates are found in cosmetics and other household items. They’re often added to plastics and other products to make them more flexible and long-lasting. In cosmetics, they make skincare products more elastic and improve fragrances. Concerns include potential endocrine disruption, links to child neurodevelopmental issues, and contributing to asthma/allergies.

Why We Love Mustela Organic Micellar Water with Olive Oil and Aloe

Mustela Organic Micellar Water with Olive Oil and Aloe stands out from other micellar waters on the market. It earned the Good Housekeeping Award for sustainability. It’s crafted from only eight ingredients, and 99.7% of them are naturally derived. Two of those ingredients are organic aloe vera and olive oil, both of which have stood the test of time for their soothing effectiveness. The olive oil comes from family-owned groves in the South of France, cold-pressed for maximum potency. This fragrance-free micellar water benefits your skin and the planet (the biodegradable formula comes in sugar cane packaging). It's gentle for babies and effective for makeup removal.
